I guess my issue is kids who just refuse to follow directions. I was a sub when I first tried high school, so that might have made my situation harder. But I had a student who just refused to go into the hall. The response was "you can't make me".

I love this exercise, but I do wonder, how would you handle kids who have to repeat the year? In the Netherlands (where I teach in secondary education), if your grades aren't good enough, you have to repeat the year. Besides that, the new classes in the next year are also mixed: some students already know you, others don't, so for some students it will be a repeat exercise, while for others it won't be. How would you handle this?

I cried in high school because a of a teacher. He had told us to answer like 5 questions in a powerpoint slide and discuss with our seatmates. Then teacher was trying to catch everyone's attention and instead of going "Hey, we are moving on" or an attention catch, he picked on me for talking to my seatmate about the questions which he told us to discuss. He made me change seats in front of the whole class and sent me outside when I accidentally banged my knee on the desk and said "ow." I was really distressed because I didn't want to miss any of the instruction. I still have no idea what I did wrong as an Adult

These are GREAT! I taught first grade for 5 years, and never struggled with classroom management. I became a stay at home mom for the last 5 years after having my kids. I am now subbing and when I sub upper grade / junior high I notice my classroom management with the littles doesn’t translate with older kids (obviously). I love these tips, I am going to try using NOISE today. Thank you so much!

I started substitute teaching recently, and I’ve been surprised to find how much I love middle school students, but since I haven’t really had any training yet, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out what to do when a class won’t listen. I’ll definitely try out these tips. Thank you!!

Is it true that in your society middle school students learn using the PC and the internet? In the corner of the world where I am, all electronic devices are seen as demons for kids. And whenever the kids have PC or phones, they use it for games and game videos and totally lose control over themselves. As a result, our education remains in the "stone age", while children in other places are using modern technology to learn. One example is the dictionary. While the dictionary website is so powerful and convenient, our students are limited to the paper ones, because once they get online, they do everything but study.

I see that you teach students how to learn. But in my society, education is all about teaching content because the ability to learn can hardly be tested in a single paper exam. And the competition in exams is so harsh that students can afford no other business.

Never here in the Philippines. We revere our teachers so much that it gives us ick and are very uncomfortable calling them by their first name. I mean we do not call our elders by their first name, we call them ate, kuya, uncle, auntie, lolo, lola. So it won’t make sense to our culture.

I really like when people give specific examples in their videos, it is very helpful as a new teacher. You have done a great job at doing this. In your 10 tips in 10 mins video I really like how you gave examples of what to say to students so that you are kind but direct and not confrontational. To answer your second question, one mistake I made at the beginning of this year was having a classroom management reward system that was too much for me to handle. I was going to have tallies on the board for “Oh No” and “Oh Yay” and if they had more “oh yay” tallies their class would get a marble( after they get enough marbles they get a little prize). It’s a great idea but pausing from helping students to go back and forth to the board was a hassle and was easily forgotten. Also when I marked an “oh no” tally students just made a joke and would yell “oh no” sarcastically. It just became a distraction and more work for me.

When I worked in schools, I was often given the side show documents or teaching plans of a certain course and was expected to be able to teach immediately without preparation. I said, "I still need to adjust it. I can't use it for my class directly", but few people understand me... I thought I was the one with something wrong. ""Maybe something is wrong with my ability. Why I can not do what everyone else does" I would think this way. Maybe this is just the general culture of my society and I happen to be the odd one.

As a middle school teacher, it feels disingenuous to see teachers (now former teachers) produce so much content on RUclips about classroom management and then announce they are leaving teaching. It feels like a sell-out. Education and advice from teachers on RUclips is such terrible advice and will only discourage young people entering this field who really need good training to just end up quitting.
